Hazorea KOI – Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are Hazorea Koi different from Koi produced everywhere else in the world?
A. The Koi are the same as those produced everywhere else – the only difference is the fact that Hazorea Koi are raised in a custom-built, bio-secure, controlled and monitored environment. Most other Koi are bred and/or grown in ponds.

Q. What is the difference between the Hazorea Bio-Secure System and other facilities?
A. The Hazorea facility is one of the few systems existing today where Koi are grown from egg to shipment in an entirely enclosed, isolated, secured and self-sustaining system.

Q. Are Hazorea Koi immune to the Koi Virus?
A. No. Neither are Koi from anywhere else in the world. Only a few farms in Israel claim that their Koi are immune after being put through a special process of exposing them to the virus.

Q. What is the difference between Hazorea Koi and other Israeli Koi?
A. Other Israeli Koi go through an immunization process that involves infection with the Koi virus. Hazorea Koi never come into contact with the Koi virus.

Q. The Koi Virus is a temperature sensitive (induced) disease. How can I be sure that Hazorea Koi imported during March will not break out with the virus when the temperature warms up?

A. The Hazorea enclosed Koi system is kept at temperatures at which the virus is most virulent - all year round. This is your foolproof guarantee against receiving fish that are either infected or carrying the virus.

Q. What is the risk of being infected with the Koi Virus from Hazorea Koi?
A. No risk whatsoever since you are getting fish from a quarantined system sustained at 23°C. in a bio-secure, virus-free facility and not from ponds on an open farm, or from a system that is not bio-secure.

Q. Can the Hazorea guarantee of virus-free Koi be successfully defended in litigation?
A. We believe it can although we have had no prior experience with this. The Koi facility conditions at Hazorea constitute effective proof that the virus could not have originated at Hazorea.

Q. Can Hazorea provide certification that its Koi are regularly examined for KHV by independent veterinary laboratories?
A. Samples of Koi from the Hazorea facility are examined regularly at the Israeli Agricultural Ministry facilities. This includes a monthly PCR scan for KHV, in spite of the fact that it is impossible for KHV to go undetected in our facility. The results of the examinations can be provided upon request. We can also supply a Bio-Security Certificate for the Koi facility.

Q. If Hazorea Koi are grown in a closed and isolated system, will they not be more susceptible to disease and bacteria once they are shipped to a new environment?

A. The Hazorea Koi facility is not sterile and the water does contain the usual bacteria common to most fish environments. However, since Hazorea Koi are born and grow in a system they are hardier and stronger than pond grown Koi, acclimatize quicker and are less prone to stress. The Bio Secure facility protects the Koi from KHV, the Aremonas bacteria and other diseases and parasites that do not normally exist in clean water.

Q. Is it easy to import Hazorea Koi?
A. All you need is an import license from your ministry. We include the air-freight in our prices and can ship to the airport of your choice with all the necessary health certification and documentation.
